The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke all tell the story: mothers and fathers bringing their children to see and even touch Jesus. Who was this man who was preaching good news of salvation? Who was this man who healed the sick, stood up for the poor, outcasts and women? Jesus also welcomed children and who told the disciples to let them come to Him for they were an example of the innocence and purity of heart needed to get to heaven." They still are!
The heart of a child is naturally and instinctively drawn to Jesus and as it is for adults, it is around and in the person of Jesus that their faith is formed.
The most important task of parents and guardians is to prepare their children for heaven. At our child's Baptism, we and the child's godparents respond to that call with a resounding promise of "yes, I will". The most impactful faith formation takes place at home and we wish to partner with you as you prepare a foundation of faith for your families. As we do this together, we will all be pleasantly surprised by what our children will teach us.
Faith Formation for Children: Programs and Schedules
"Catechesis" is an ancient word in the Church. It means teaching and preparing individuals for their entry and growth in the Catholic Faith. Family involvement is an element at every level. We are blessed with devoted and trained teachers (catechists) who personally share their faith and their experience of Jesus with the children. Second to this is the use of professional resources appropriate to each age level. They support parents and guardians in extending the faith practices and learning into the home.

CHILDREN - GRADES K-4
During the school year, young children are invited to leave the church during Mass and gather in a classroom. There the catechists use a series of weekly readings to bring the message of the Gospel for that week to a level children can understand. This weekly resource also helps parents participate in their important role as the first educators of their children. Catechesis will be supplemented with opportunities for families to participate in the life of our parish through outreach, prayer, and social events throughout the year.
SACRAMENT PREPARATION - SPARK & FLAME
After Baptism, the next step in growth in the faith means entering into the sacramental life. Chilren prepare and then receive Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation.
Bishop Deeley has established a two-year sacrament preparation process throughout the Diocese for this purpose. In our parish, the children who register into Year 1 are called SPARK and those who register into Year 2 are called FLAME. Family involvement is a key feature.

WHOLE FAMILY FAITH FORMATION
If a weekly commitment is not possible for your family, join us for 5 whole family gatherings this year. This option is available at two of our churches (see any of the churches above) and will include a pot luck supper along with a themed, interactive, faith-learning experience. We will incorporate sacred film, art, music, theater to learn about the person and life of Jesus, the traditions of our faith, and the saints. Outreach and prayer will also be components of these community gatherings.
